Herb garden at Hardwick Hall
To the south of Hardwick Hall is a large rectangular formal garden divided up into 4
"squares". The south-westerly square is an extensive herb garden housing a wide range of culinary, medicinal and decorative herbs. In this view the cotton lavender edging to the borders is evident: Santolina rosmarinifolia (subspecies rosmarinifolia), with its yellow flowers, to the right and Santolina chamaecyparissus, with its deeply toothed, silver woolly aromatic leaves, to the left. The plant growing up the "wigwams" is the Golden Hop.
