Thorpe Marsh Decommissioned Power Station
Thorpe Marsh was decommissioned in 1994 yet the six cooling towers remain. The reason for this is because of a main railway line adjacent to the site. During demolition the main chimney was brought down using explosives. The impact of this destabilised the railway embankment, closing the line for several days. Given that there are six cooling towers and also a canal to the immediate east of the site, it was felt that demolition should be put on indefinite hold.
Only five of the six cooling towers can be seen in this shot. The sixth is hidden by the tower nearest to the lens.
