Mining subsidence has caused the land to slip away drastically between Wigan and Leigh, and large flashes have been formed beside the Leigh Branch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The canal banks have been built up to maintain its level (which stretches from here via Manchester and Warrington to Runcorn) between Scotsman's Flash to the left and Pearson's Flash to the right. St. James, Poolstock, is in the distance.
