NZ7107 : Danby Castle
Danby Castle:
It's said Mary Queen of Scots stayed here at least once
Tom Scott Burns in his book Round and About The North Yorkshire Moors - A Glimpse of the Past makes no mention of this although he does say that Katherine Parr lived there for several years with her second husband, Lord John Latimer. Latimer died in 1543 and four months later Katherine Parr became Queen of England. A portrait of her used to hang in nearby Danby Lodge.
The castle itself was begun around 1323 by Sir William Latimer who came into possession of the Forest and Lordship of Danby through the marriage of his son, also William, with Lucia de Thweng who was only 15 at the time. Edward II was a visitor to the castle during this period.
