SD8742 : The Chicken Run

The Chicken Run
The Chicken Run
The official name of this road is Standing Stone Gate, and it forms part of the unclassified route often used by motorists between Barnoldswick and Higherford or Barrowford. White Moor Reservoir is up the grassy bank to the right. The County boundary between Lancashire (to the left) and Yorkshire (to the right) runs along the wall at the left hand side of the road, and continues further through Stansfield Tower, which can just be made out on the summit of Blacko Hill on the horizon.
The reason for the unofficial name given as the title is that, along this straight(-ish) half-mile of road, young male drivers ("boy racers") are expected to attain a speed of 70 m.p.h. (and if you don't, you are 'chicken'). Needless to say, this is a very unwise and irresponsible thing to attempt.
