Market Overton industrial estate: former ironstone railway engine shed
Ironstone was quarried at Market Overton from 1906-72 and served by an extensive railway system which joined the Saxby-Bourne main line at Pain's Siding (SK887188). The original owners of the quarries were James Pain Ltd, but by the time this engine shed was built in 1954 to supplement Pain's original, the system was owned by Stewarts & Lloyds. An abortive railway preservation scheme was based here in the 1970s, when Market Overton briefly became the home of the famous preserved main-line steam locomotives "Flying Scotsman" and "Pendennis Castle", which were owned by Flying Scotsman Enterprises.
