Limestone pavement

Above the dun, which is situated more or less at the top of the escarpment, limestone pavement is exposed. Here the grykes are very deep and shelter a miniature forest. Tracing the beds of limestone along the hillside leads to a clearly-stepped horizon where the gently-dipping beds are weathered into smaller escarpments that mirror the structure of the whole island.
