Fochabers Floods 2009 (16)
This is the cause of all the mayhem. You can see that the bridge consists of one large and two small tubes, and that most of the water is coming through the nearest one, which is the only one not blocked by debris on the upstream side, as shown in NJ3458 : Fochabers Floods 2009 (11). I was told by several people that when the bridge was built, there had been complaints about its probable inadequacy to cope with a flash flood. These had been dismissed by the official who decided on its design on the grounds that "it's only a tiny stream'. I hate to think what the council's cheeseparing on bridge design has cost in damage, remedial work and disruption to the lives of the neighbours. Neither of the two conventional bridges upstream suffered any damage or problems.
