The Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, was founded in 1670 as a physic garden to grow medicinal plants. The Garden is both a scientific institution and a tourist attraction. Admission is free, although there's a modest charge for entry to the glasshouses. The Tropical Palm House, an interior view of which is shown here, dates from 1834 [maximum temperature 24ºC; minimum temperature 18ºC; relative humidity 80%; and height to the top of the dome, 22m (72ft)].
