The Middleway passing through the southern tip of Green's Copse
The Middleway is a minor road that leads from Andover Down to Middleton in the Test Valley. Here it passes through the southern tip of Green's Copse. There is a local legend that a cockatrice (dragon-like creature) was hatched by a toad from an egg laid in the crypt of Wherwell priory. The beast bothered the locals in Harewood Forest, killing several knights who tried to slay it. In the end it was run through with a spear by a local man called Green - he distracted it with its own reflection in a mirror. This was supposed to have happened in the area now known as Green's Copse (to the left in this photo). As usual, the details vary according to who is telling the story.
