M1458 : Carrownagower Bridge, Cong Canal

4 km from Neale, Ireland

Carrownagower Bridge, Cong Canal
Carrownagower Bridge, Cong Canal
The Cong Canal was a 19th Century engineering folly. Linking Lough Mask to the North with Lough Corrib to the south, it was excavated through highly karstified limestone and hence leaks like a sieve. In summer most of the water from Lough Mask drains underground before even reaching the canal, but in winter the canal can become a raging torrent following prolonged heavy rain
