TQ3414 : Sandpit Field

Sandpit Field
Sandpit Field
The name of the field according to the 1842 tithe map. Viewed from the north-south bridleway that links the B2116 near Old Middleton with Streat Lane north of the railway line. The soil here is a narrow band of greensand that runs between the chalk of the South Down and the clay of the Low Weald which in the past was dug for sand hence the name. The crop appears to be rape, it certainly smelt like it but did not realise it grew so late.
