Ford on Stainery Clough
Ford on Stainery Clough
Twenty five years ago the water here would have been crystal clear. The fact that it is now reddy-brown is actually a sign of environmental improvement. The acid rain which fell for many years due to sulphur from coal-burning and other man-made sources prevented the organic dies from leaching out of the moorland peat. Now that a more natural pH has been achieved the water has turned brown.
