Course of former railway
The trees mark the course of the Didcot to Newbury section of the Didcot Newbury & Southampton Railway in the vicinity of Churn Halt looking north. This section of the line was opened in 1881 as the first part of a new link between the Midlands and Southampton but closed to passengers in 1962 and to freight in 1967. The line passed through some very empty country (as can be seen from this picture) and was duplicated by a faster if longer route via Reading and Basingstoke which still survives.
