Wartime Weekend 2009 (11), Blunsdon Station
Wartime Weekend 2009 (11), Blunsdon Station
The Wartime Weekend is an annual event at the Swindon and Cricklade heritage railway. It attracts various enthusiasts of military history including lookalikes of all descriptions. One of the features of the second world war in Britain was the widespread shortage of goods, a situation which inevitably created black markets in otherwise unattainable items. The gentleman on the left, whom I now is called Alec, is dressed as what was called a 'spiv'. Perhaps the best-known fictional spiv was Private Joe Walker from the fondly-remembered 'Dad's Army' television series of the 1960s. The gentleman on the right is, I think, attired as a lieutenant of the United States army.
Swindon and Cricklade Railway's Wartime Weekends
The S&CR LinkExternal link runs various events on its preserved railway. One of the more well-known is the Wartime Weekend held annually in September. The weekend is focused mainly, but not exclusively, on the second world war. These occasions allow numerous special-interest groups the opportunity to display and demonstrate their invariably military-based artefacts such as vehicles, uniforms and weapons. The highlight of the event is a battle re-enactment, normally set in France after D-Day as this enables the three main combatants in the Western European theatre, Britain, Germany and the United States, the chance to play their parts. The scenarios enable the participants to fire lots of blanks and make lots of noise and smoke. Victory rotates, one year the Allies win, the next it's the Axis. All very fair really.
