Bramshill House
Bramshill House
Open to the public during Heritage Open Days for just one day a year, Bramshill has been a national police college for senior officers since the Home Office acquired the estate in 1953. English Heritage describe the building as 'A great Jacobean palace' and it certainly is a massive edifice. It dates from 1605 when Lord Edward Zouche purchased the Bramshill estate complete with its Tudor manor house, and began extending it. His fascination with architecture ensured the creation of a great Renaissance house that is the imposing building we see today. Zouche died in 1625, and it then saw several owners, until the Cope family bought it in 1700. It remained with that family until 1935, and after a further period of private ownership, it eventually was acquired by the Home Office. Grade I Listed.
