Imperial War Museum at Duxford
The American Air Museum was designed by Sir Norman Foster and constructed by Arup; its total cost of 13.5M was raised by private subscriptions from many sources. Opened by the Queen on 1 August 1997, the Museum stands as a memorial to the 30,000 American airmen who gave their lives flying from UK bases during World War II, and in other more recent conflicts including Vietnam, Libya, and Iraq. It houses an outstanding collection of American military aircraft, including a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell, P-47 Thunderbolt, and aircraft from the Cold War era such as a B-52 Stratofortress, SR-71 Blackbird and F-4 Phantom. As can be seen from this interior view, many aircraft are suspended from the ceiling as if in flight.
