Amazing Cutting Equipment
Amazing Cutting Equipment
Amazing as it's not what you probably expect. Because of the fuel oil and ammunition on the wreck of HMS Royal Oak, burning through the hull using electrical or oxy-acetylene type methods is impossible. How does it work? The bags on the left contain powdered garnet, all the way from Australia. This is poured into the tray in the centre of the picture from where it is washed into the vertical cylinder. In here it is mixed into a suspension and sent under pressure down the hoses. These end at a spray gun attached to the wreck and pointing at the hull. The jet is positioned by the diver, but controlled from the surface. When operating it has the potential to cut through 4 inches of steel. Today it was cutting very precisely through just one inch.
