The rock in the foreground has some curious markings on top. Could be from the ice age, with a touch imagination, or more likely man made. There was once a lot of industrial activity in this area. I have been reliably informed that the marks in these rocks are drill marks that were used for inserting blast material to blast these rocks apart. There used to be coal mines in this area. first of all 'bell pits' then later the drift mine was begun. The farthest that the miners could follow the coal seam was close to the rocks in the photograph. The Whinstone barrier prevented further mining and that was the end, literally. The rocks were split apart and as the shot was inserted in a vertical plane they split and fell apart leaving the marks that we can now see facing up.
