NS4572 : Minewatchers' Post

Minewatchers' Post
Minewatchers' Post
When this picture was taken, the structure had already been weakened by the loss of its wall on the side facing the Clyde. By the start of 2015, it had collapsed altogether: NS4572 : Ruins of minewatchers' post.

Counting from west to east, this was the second of three minewatchers' posts located along the northern shore of the River Clyde between Bowling Outer Basin and the Erskine Bridge. This one was on the outer side of the vegetation-covered embankment that can be seen on the right in a view of NS4572 : The Dalnottar Burn.

The role of the structure is described in the description of the first of these posts: NS4573 : Minewatchers' Post. However, that first structure has only one entrance, and an internal wall that extends most of the way from the side of the door towards the opposite wall.

(To simplify the following comparison, I will speak of the second post as if it were still standing.)

The second and third posts have the same layout (different from that of the first post): each has two entrances, located on opposite walls; also, a shorter internal wall extends from beside each entrance.

Since the second post (shown here) is missing its front wall, these internal walls can be seen in a photograph taken from a different angle: NS4572 : Minewatchers' Post: view of interior.

For the third of the posts, see: NS4672 : Minewatchers' Post; that item also explains the origin of the very noticeable scattering of stones along this part of the shore.
