Donald's Quay Light
Donald's Quay Light
(Or Donald's Light; both names are found on old maps. Donald's Quay, formerly located in this area, was the site of a ferry crossing.)

"At Donald's Quay and Dalmuir cast-iron light-towers, with distinctive lights, have been erected to indicate the bends of the river at these places" [Donald MacLeod, "The Clyde District of Dumbartonshire, ..." (1886)]. For the other light of the pair mentioned there, see NS4870 : Dalmuir Light. See also the comments about those lights at NS4770 : Rashielee Light.

To see this beacon in context, and for an informative account of the history of the immediate area, see NS4572 : River beacon on the railway wall. For another nearby view of the beacon, see NS4572 : Buoy by the River Clyde; for another view of the light in context, see NS4573 : Sea wall and Donald's Light.

[At the time, care was needed when examining the beacon; the wooden platform beside it is very old, with holes that are large enough to fall through. Later, by the start of 2013, there was no longer access to this area; the opening in the wall on the right had, by then, been blocked off by a new barrier.]
Donald's Quay Light
This is one of a pair of nineteenth-century lights that were erected to mark bends in the River Clyde (its twin is at Dalmuir). Donald's Quay, now long gone, was the site of a ferry crossing, and the ruin of the ferry-keeper's cottage is located nearby, beside the canal. The light was repainted in 2013, by which time access to the decaying platform on which it stands had been blocked.
