SP3964 : Grand Union Canal - Bascote top lock 'riser'

Grand Union Canal - Bascote top lock 'riser'
Grand Union Canal - Bascote top lock 'riser'
The top two (of four) locks at Bascote are unusual in that they form a 'riser' or 'two-rise'. This means that, as in 'staircase' flights of locks, one lock leads straight into the next without an intervening pound (length of canal).

Thus the bottom gates of the upper lock are also the top gates of the lower. This view of the riser at Bascote is taken from the bottom gates of the lower lock (out of sight below the photographer) and is looking at the gates between the two lock chambers - the top gates for the lower lock, the bottom gates for the upper lock.
