River Rother: Fittleworth Bridge
Please see the captions to Colin's TQ0018 : Fittleworth Bridge and Simon's TQ0018 : Fittleworth Bridge for the history of the bridge. The Ordnance Survey map of 1880 shows a towing path on the bank, on the right side here, demonstrating the navigable nature of the waterway. Interestingly Colin's mage of September 2008 shows a large build up of mud under the right side arch. A year later and it is clear, presumably removed to ensure that in a flood event water flows as efficiently as possible through the bridge openings.
