Turnover Bridge, near Gayton Junction
Turnover Bridge, near Gayton Junction
A turnover bridge is provided where the canal towpath crosses from one side of the canal to the other. This allowed the horse to get across the canal without the need to unhitch. The reason for this one was brought about by Gayton Junction which, unusually at a canal junction, does not have a bridge over the end of the arm (so the horses therefore needed to be on the opposite side when towing boats that were continuing on the main line). The result is that for the short distance between this bridge and the junction towpaths are provided on both banks of the canal.
