Paddles up at lock 12, Oxford Canal
This rack-and-pinion gear mounted on concrete posts is used to open the underwater sluices (known as 'paddles') to admit water into the lock chamber to raise boats. In this photo, the racks project above the posts showing that the paddles are raised ('up') to admit water and fill the lock chamber.
