The Forth road bridge
The Forth road bridge
The Forth road bridge opened in 1964, replacing a busy vehicle ferry crossing. At the time of construction it was the fourth largest suspension bridge in the world. Originally tolls were payable in both directions but in 1997 the northbound toll was doubled and southbound toll removed. Later, in February 2008, the toll was discontinued completely.

In recent years there has been concern about corrosion in the suspension cables which are now subject to monitoring and remedial work.
