Hop fields
A traditional Hop Field, or Hop Garden, was formed by rows of poles or strings 16 feet high. Modern fields are about 10 feet high. The hop plant starts growing in spring and grows up the pole or string, until September when it is harvested. Hops are dried and used for flavouring beer. …read more LinkExternal link
Hopper Huts
Hopper huts were primitive buildings which hop picking families would stay in during the hop picking season in September, during the 18th century and early 20th century. Usually built of corrugated metal around a basic timber frame, more wealthy farmers built them out of brick, and may even have included a small fireplace and chimney.

Museum of Kent Life
The Museum of Kent Life is an open air museum, based around an original farmstead, called Sandling Farm. One of the original buildings is an 19th century oast house, which is used to demonstrate hop drying during the September hop-picking season. There are also two farm houses and farmyard buildings.

A number of buildings have been saved from destruction and reconstructed at the site. These include hopper huts, thatched barn, granary, chapel, village hall, cottages, and another farmhouse.
