Hard-standing outside old Dartrey stables block
This area of hard-standing just outside the entrance to the Dartrey estate stables (dating from the 1840s and now ruins) is thought to have been built up for harnessing horses to their 19th century coaches, and also to provide the extra space needed in which to turn into the narrow entrance to the stables proper. Nearby, the trees have been allowed to close in thickly as the old estate property owned by Coillte is today entirely given over to forestry
