Heather on Moughton
Heather on Moughton
As Moughton is a classic area of carboniferous limestone, it may seem odd that there should be patches of heather, a plant more associated with the acid soils of nearby moorland. The heather of the Moughton area is growing on patches of till left behind by glaciers which overrode the plateau. At one time Moughton was managed for grouse, but this is hardly ideal grouse habitat, and the area seems to have been abandoned by grouse shooters before WW2.
