St. Nicholas' Church, Deptford Green, SE8 - memorial to Edward Fenton and Roger Boyle
Edward Fenton was commander of the Admiral's ship in the battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588. Earlier, he had been on an expedition with Sir Martin Frobisher, had sailed to Cape Horn in the galleon Leicester, commanded by Captain Hawkins and assisted by Captain John Drake in the barque Francis, and had defeated a Spanish squadron. He died in 1603. On the same marble monument is the name of Roger Boyle, who died young in 1615, while being educated in Deptford and staying at Sayes Court. This provides an interesting link between the Fenton family and the diarist John Evelyn. Captain Fenton's younger brother, Sir Geoffrey Fenton, was Secretary of State for Ireland. His daughter, Katherine, married Richard Boyle, who later became Earl of Cork, and their eldest son, Roger, is commemorated here. Christopher Browne of Sayes Court married Thomazine, the widow of Captain Edward Fenton and their grand-daughter Mary (who had become an heiress) married John Evelyn. As a result of these family connections, all the letters and papers of Hawkins, Drake, Fenton and Frobisher came into John Evelyn's possession and, three centuries later, form part of his archive at the British Library.
