NS8561 : Fortissat Stone

Fortissat Stone
Fortissat Stone
According to local tradition, the Fortissat district to the north of Shotts derives its name from this piece of rock. In Covenanting days, forty worshippers are said to have sat on this large stone to listen to the words of a Covenanting preacher. Bit of a squeeze I reckon, although perhaps part of the stone was subsequently cut away when the road was being widened!
