Tree sculpture in St Clare Street Penzance
This has recently been carved from a Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) which was dying. These trees, frequently planted in Cornwall in the Victorian era only have a life of about 100 years and are liable to shed their branches towards the end of their life. In an urban situation such as this the local authority cannot risk the consequent insurance claims so the trees are felled. This tree has been spared that fate, unlike this one SW7728 : Grove Hill Mawnan Smith, and instead an attractive artwork has been provided by Cornwall-based sculptor Peter Martin LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) .
