SN8355 : Irish Bridge across the Afon Irfon, Powys

Irish Bridge across the Afon Irfon, Powys
Irish Bridge across the Afon Irfon, Powys
This shows the westernmost of the three Irish bridges allowing the Abergwesyn to Tregaron scenic mountain road to cross the river before ascending the famous "Devil's Staircase". This durable low style of bridge (concrete on top of culverts) replaced former fords in order to reduce the amount of time the road was impassable after rain. The river level is low. It hadn't rained for over a week when this image was taken. After heavy rain, the water floods across the bridge, which is still then fordable for a while, but in rising waters the utmost care and judgement is necessary.
