The Arun is tidal along this reach and the ground on the west side of the river is protected from inundation by this levée. The reedbeds to the right conceal the river entirely, so only glimpses of it are available from the public riverside walk on the top of the embankment. The wooded hillside in the distance is Offham Hanger.
