Early morning on the edge of Anses Wood, New Forest
Early morning on the edge of Anses Wood, New Forest
Not long after sunrise and I've finally found the "atmosphere" beloved of colour guidebooks and picture postcards. The scene is distinctively New Forest - the holly trees have been browsed by cattle, deer and ponies leaving them bare-trunked up to a certain height. The woodland floor is red with beech leaf litter, and bare from the high pressure of grazing. Beyond the trees the dewy plain has short-cropped grass - reseeded after the decommissioning of the Stoney Cross airfield and since then grazed by the animals.
