Inveraray Castle
Inveraray Castle
The east corner and north-east elevation of Inveraray Castle. In about 1720, Sir John Vanbrugh sketched the idea of a square castle with a central tower for John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll. The 2nd Duke had an ambitious scheme to rebuild the existing castle and to remove and rebuild the town. However it wasn't until after the Duke's death that his brother Archibald, the 3rd Duke, reinitiated plans and work was started between 1744 and 1761 to designs by Roger Morris and completed by Robert Mylne between 1772 and 1785 for John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll. The basement and first two storeys surround a quadrangle which supports the central tower. Following a fire in 1877, another floor of bedrooms and conical spires were added to the castellated turrets at each corner of the building.
