Depicting an era when one form of travel was superseding another.
Peter Stoner writes: This building was part of the button factory in use up to 1939 when it burnt down. It was the base of the water bailiff, Mr Peach. Inside he kept his ferrets and guns. The small house opposite was the Toll House. How do I know this? Mr Cork, the Barcombe Mills local builder, told me so. His family operated the toll house up to the building of the Bailey Bridge in 1940. The sign shown is modern and was not on display in 1948/9 when I lived at Barcombe Mills.
