Battery north of Alnmouth
Battery north of Alnmouth
Although it was altered in WW2, this battery was completed in 1881. It was erected by the Duke of Northumberland for use by the Percy Artillery Volunteers. It is said that there used to be a competition between the operators of this battery and one at Amble to see who could hit a target out in the bay. The Alnmouth people won, causing the Amble people to come and riot in the streets of Alnmouth.
On the right can be seen a red and white plate. This is an orienteering control point.
