Two of the lime kilns at Porth Clais
Two of the lime kilns at Porth Clais
Limestone was brought in by boat, burnt in the kilns on the quayside to produce lime which was spread on the fields nearby, the resulting increase in pH (alkalinity) was sufficient to liberate mineral nutrients thereby increasing the fertility of the soil. Subsequent imports of guano rendered this obsolete and in turn was rendered obsolete by the Haber process for the chemical fixation of nitrogen.
