Nelson Monument from Regent Road
Monument, designed by Robert Burn in the shape of a spyglass, to commemorate Vice-Admiral Nelson who died at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October, 1805. His victory secured for Britain nearly a century and a half of naval supremacy over her maritime rivals which ended only with the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. The tower, built between 1807 and 1815, stands 106 feet high from its base on the Calton Hill at 456 feet above sea-level. Naval semaphore flags are hung every year on 21st October to re-enact the famous signal displayed by HMS Victory on the day of the battle: "England expects every man to do his duty". And one assumes that the 64 Scots on board, along with many other nationalities on Nelson's ship, did just that.

(They do say that Nelson's semaphore signallers were woefully incompetent. The message was supposed to be "England expects that every [Scots]man will do his duty [to fight our battles]", but they didn't have enough flags!)
