The kirkyard contains the graves of several eminent figures in Edinburgh's past, such as Provosts George Drummond and William Fettes, the economist Adam Smith and the philosopher Dugald Stewart. But perhaps the most interesting burial is that of Ebenezer Scroggie, meal man (grain merchant) in the Canongate. When visiting the city in 1841, the great Victorian writer Charles Dickens happened to come across Scroggie's grave while taking an evening walk. In the twilight he misread 'meal man' as 'mean man' and, according to his dairy, was shocked that, even among the thrifty Scots, a man should be thus remembered for all time. The experience planted the germ of an idea which eventually grew into 'A Christmas Carol', published in 1843. Thus, Scroggie gave rise to the character of Ebenezer Scrooge. Unbelievably, the grave marker was lost when repair work was carried out in the graveyard in 1932. It must be only a matter of time before someone realises the tourist potential in - pardon the pun - resurrecting Scroggie once more.
