This photograph shows the last section to be built of the proposed Calton extension to Edinburgh's New Town before the construction bubble burst in the 1830s. Maps from the 1820s show a scheme, proposed by William Stark in 1812, comprising broad thoroughfares, grand squares and an elegant crescent between Leith Walk and Easter Road; the whole scheme to be built on land owned by the Heriot's Trust and Trinity Hospital, stretching to below Pilrig. Many of the street-names had been decided before publication of the maps, though the streets themselves never materialised: The Mall, Playfair Street, Trinity Square, Hopetoun Street, Heriot Crescent etc. The names of Hillside Crescent, Brunswick Street, Wellington Street and Montgomery Street were retained among the streets actually built, though they were of a more modest scale and the houses were of a humbler character than first envisaged. Far from its intended opulence and elegance, this became an area of high-density artisan and working-class housing surrounding a railway marshalling yard built between Leith Walk and Easter Road in the 1860s.
