NT2674 : Portuguese gun, Calton Hill

taken 8 years ago, near to Edinburgh, Great Britain

Portuguese gun, Calton Hill
Portuguese gun, Calton Hill
A gun of Portuguese origin, bearing the date 1624 but believed to be older. An inscription explains that it was made by Don Diego De Silva Conde De Portoalegre and Don Phillipe Rey De Spana, presumably for the Spanish Crown, as it displays the Royal coat of arms of Spain. At some point in time it was captured by the Burmese, having possibly arrived in their country in 1624. It fell into British hands in 1886 on the capture of Mandalay during the conquest of Burma.
