SP2054 : Clopton Bridge from Cox's Yard
near to Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, Great Britain

Clopton Bridge from Cox's Yard
Clopton Bridge dates originally from 1480, and substantially is the same bridge that existed in the C15th. Various repairs and alterations have been carried out over the intervening centuries, most notably raising of the parapets (walls along the top of the bridge) at the end of the C17th. Probably the most major repair required was the rebuilding of an entire arch after it had been blown up to prevent Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarians from entering the town during the Civil War.
This view is taken from Cox's Yard which is now home to a bar with tables and chairs outside on the river's edge. To the right in this picture the bit of land you can see belongs to an island in the river which is designated as a nature reserve. According to the planning maps the bridge actually spans this island, but as can be seen this is not in fact the case when the water level is at this height - though it is obvious from the wildlife how shallow the water is here. For a close-up of the waterbirds see SP2054 : Geese and gulls neath Clopton Bridge
