Tree, Montgomery Street Playpark
For decades this play area was the Montgomery Street Swingpark until the Council Recreation Department took the inexplicable decision to remove the swings. This was presumably done for Health & Safety reasons, as kids in the past did have some wild habits. Gone are the days when pensioners were employed as "Parkies" to ensure the equipment was not abused and the park was safely locked up at night—not!

"A laddie's maybe sitting on the seat o' a swing and you ask him 'Do you want a bronco?' and you stand up on the seat in front o' him, and ye beam him up and up, and then at the last minute, ye jump off and ye must run under the seat and his legs that are danglin' doun. At the same time he bucks up [jerks the swing up]."

"Ye're jist yoursel' on the swing, stannin' and ye beam up until at the very last minute ye kick the seat owre your heid as ye let go the chains wi' your hands. And the chains go into a knot. Ye can have a pal on a swing alongside o' ye and ye can have a contest to see who can get the maist knots in [the chains of] their swing."

"At night if it's still light and ye dinnie want the swings to be locked up, ye wrap them right roond the bar, and ye slink back later and get them doun, for the Parkie's usually an auld man and he cannie climb the poles."

"If naebody's in the Swing Park ye play at Chinese Broncos yoursel' an' sometimes ye put the swing right owre the bar. If ye're co't ye're taken to the cops."

(schoolkids from the 1950s quoted in James Ritchie, Golden City 1965)
