Dryden Family armorial relics
Attached to the interior south wall of St.Mary's in Canons Ashby is this collection of family relics pertaining to the Dryden family, owners of this private parish church and of the nearby manor.
At the top can be seen three hatchments (see Link
) beneath them are three flags. Next comes a short purple (heraldic purpure) tabard on which can be seen the Lion Rampant beneath pierced estoiles and what I think is an armillary sphere. There is a canton (top left) with a red (gules) hand on white (argent = silver) background - this looks like the "bloody hand of Ulster". This tabard therefore displays the bearings of the shield of the Dryden family's arms. Immediately above the tabard is the helm (helmet) and surmounting that the crest, which is some creature holding another armillary sphere. Below the tabard is a cartouche showing again the Dryden's shield, though while the lion and estoiles on the tabard are black (sable) on the cartouche they are shown in yellow (or = gold) and the field is blue (azure) rather than purple. This difference could suggest a different branch of the family, or may simply have been an error by the tabard maker, as black is not normally allowed on purple (or any other "colour") by heraldic rules. {Note yellow & white are respectively gold and silver and are therefore metals not colours, so *can* be placed on purple or blue (or any other heraldic colour) or vice versa).
Either side of the cartouche can be seen a gauntlet and directly beneath it a sword points downwards. Between the sword and each glove dangle what I think are spurs. This is an unusual collection of historical memorabilia and makes for an interesting display I think.
