Peat cutting
Peat cutting
Active digging of peat, showing the controlling water level quite close to the surface (most of the bog is floating). Fresh turves are laid out on the surface to harden before being stacked to dry thoroughly. The water content of the in-situ peat may be 80-90% and that will reduce to around 30% with air-drying. In this area, peat-cutting is said to be increasing as a consequence of unemployment among the population.
