Designed by Samuel Whitfield Daukes (1811-1880)(please see: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) ))of Messrs Daukes & Hamilton of Cheltenham and completed in December 1844. The newly built college became the winning design in an architectural competition and is described as Tudor with influences of an Oxford college. The tower was intended as an observatory. The stone is limestone from local quarries.
