Carruber's Close plaque, High Street
Carruber's Close plaque, High Street
Site of an early, but short-lived attempt by the poet Allan Ramsay to reintroduce Theatre to Scotland almost two centuries after playhouses were closed during the Protestant Reformation.

The Jacobite reference relates to the presence of the old St. Paul's Chapel at the foot of the close. The Episcopal church with its Anglican services was the natural home in the city for supporters of the Jacobite cause.
