The Flower Field, Old Seaham
Archaeological digs here in 1997 and 1999 investigated a burial ground between St Mary's Church and the east lodge of Seaham Hall. The many burials uncovered in this area provided further evidence for a very early Christian use of the site. Dating showed that the cemetery was in use between AD660 and AD880, older than St Mary's Church itself and one of the earliest Anglo-Saxon Christian sites in England.
